”For centuries, Africa has mesmerized the world with its stunning scenery, its ancient civilizations, its hypnotizing music. This is your chance to experience the world's most fascinating continent.”

You are going on safari! This week you will be exploring the different regions of Africa by reading about the people, cultures and traditions in at least 2 regions of Africa. You will be traveling in safari groups of 3-5 people. Each person in your group should have a role. Everyone should be helping explore for answers to the handouts and everyone should be completing their own copy of the notes!

Resources out in the wild are scarce. With that said, only 2 members of your group may have a laptop, so you must practice sharing.

Start by clicking here to transport your team to base camp!
You will have the opportunity to explore 2 of the diverse geographic regions on the continent of Africa. While on your journey, all members of your safari group are expected to search for answers and work collaboratively to complete the field research handout. Your two safari guides will manage the laptops, while the interpreters will assist them in finding the relevant and important information within the website. When you return from the field, one person in your group should be elected as a spokesman to present your findings to the rest of the class. Your group's analysis should include a compare/contrast between the two regions.

Sikh Temple Field Trip - Alternate Assignment

1/27/2015

Hey Scholars! I'm sorry you couldn't join us on our field trip today. However, there is still some really important research I need you to complete in order to participate in some of the discussions we will have in class on Thursday and Friday. You may use 1st block and 3rd block to complete this assignment today! When you're done, log into Achieve3000 and check out the articles available for today. Get your points up - Semester 2 is on!

Directions! (Remember, following these is important!)

Start with this link to access the news story: Wisconsin Shootings: Sikhs Faced Discrimination Since 9/11
1.) Read this article and write down at least 5 important details on your graphic organizer.
* NOTE: READ through the WHOLE article FIRST. If you rush to take the notes, you often end up choosing details that are not actually important. Think of answering the questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Next, c
lick on this link to read the story: Possible hate crime: Sikh professor says he was beaten by men yelling, "Get Osama"
2.) This kind of discrimination is actually pretty common for Sikh Americans who choose to represent their faith by wearing a traditional turban and untrimmed beard. After reading the second article, write down
at least 5 important details on your graphic organizer.
* NOTE: READ through the WHOLE article FIRST. If you rush to take the notes, you often end up choosing details that are not actually important. Think of answering the questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

3.) THOUGHT QUESTION. On the back of your graphic organizer sheet, choose ONE of the following thought questions
and answer it in at least 6-8 complete sentences. Use information from the articles to support your opinion.

** Question Option #1 (those who saw Selma)
Compare and contrast the experiences of Sikh Americans to the African-American leaders featured in the film Selma. Include any other connections (similarities/differences) that you noticed between the film and the articles you read today.

** Question Option #2
It seems like recently there has been an increased number of hate crimes. In other words, because people are different races, genders, religions, etc. some ignorant individuals choose to act violently against them. Why do you think these kinds of crimes may be increasing in recent years? How can you connect these kinds of issues to the dreams and goals of leaders like Dr. King during the Civil Rights Movement?

** Question Option #3
Compare and contrast a moment in your life when you were discriminated against for a specific reason (your gender, your race, your age, anything!). Be sure to describe your experience and draw connections (similarities/differences) to your story and the experience of the Sikh Americans in the articles you read today. If you saw Selma, can you connect any of your struggles to those experienced by characters in the movie?

Sikh Temple Field Trip

Picture
To bring our first semester of World History to an official close - and to kickoff a challenging and exciting second semester - all World History students have been invited to participate in a field trip to the Sikh Temple of Oak Creek on Wednesday, January 28th. Students will depart after morning advisory and will return in time for school lunch.

On August 5, 2012, a gunman with ties to white supremacist organizations walked into the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin and began a rampage which killed six people, wounded many, and terrorized an entire community.
During our field trip to the temple, we will learn a little about the Sikh faith, and also participate in activities and workshops promoting tolerance and understanding across religious, racial and ethnic differences.

Sikhism
is a monotheistic religion founded during the 15th century in the Punjab region, by Guru Nanak which continued to progress with ten successive Sikh gurus, the last and current teaching being the holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib. It is the fifth-largest organized religion in the world, with approximately 30 million Sikhs.
