Hey Scholars! I'm sorry you couldn't join us on our field trip today. However, there is still some really important research I need you to complete in order to participate in some of the discussions we will have in class on Thursday and Friday. You may use 1st block and 3rd block to complete this assignment today! When you're done, log into Achieve3000 and check out the articles available for today. Get your points up - Semester 2 is on!

1.) Read this article and write down at least 5 important details on your graphic organizer.
* NOTE: READ through the WHOLE article FIRST. If you rush to take the notes, you often end up choosing details that are not actually important. Think of answering the questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

3.) THOUGHT QUESTION. On the back of your graphic organizer sheet, choose ONE of the following thought questions and answer it in at least 6-8 complete sentences. Use information from the articles to support your opinion.
** Question Option #1 (those who saw Selma)
Compare and contrast the experiences of Sikh Americans to the African-American leaders featured in the film Selma. Include any other connections (similarities/differences) that you noticed between the film and the articles you read today.
** Question Option #2
It seems like recently there has been an increased number of hate crimes. In other words, because people are different races, genders, religions, etc. some ignorant individuals choose to act violently against them. Why do you think these kinds of crimes may be increasing in recent years? How can you connect these kinds of issues to the dreams and goals of leaders like Dr. King during the Civil Rights Movement?
** Question Option #3
Compare and contrast a moment in your life when you were discriminated against for a specific reason (your gender, your race, your age, anything!). Be sure to describe your experience and draw connections (similarities/differences) to your story and the experience of the Sikh Americans in the articles you read today. If you saw Selma, can you connect any of your struggles to those experienced by characters in the movie?
