Meet Ms. V
Nicole Vurusic was born and raised on the Northside of Chicago in the North Mayfair/Albany Park neighborhood. Upon graduating from Resurrection High School, she decided to pursue her interest in history and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. With a History Education major and concentration in African-American History. She completed her education coursework with observations and practicum at North Lawndale College Prep, Oak Park River Forrest High School, Roberto Clemente High School and Mather High School. Additionally, her final semester was spent student teaching on Chicago's Southside at Dunbar Vocational Career Academy where she learned the importance of connecting with her students both as intellectuals as well as individuals. She will be forever grateful to her cooperating teacher and those students who impacted her and taught her more within that semester than she could have learned from any college coursework.
Since graduation, Ms. Vurusic has relocated to Wisconsin, where she obtained her History (725), Broadfield Social Studies (701) and Alternative Education (925) certifications from the Department of Public Instruction. She has worked as an administrative aide, program director, activities coordinator and teacher at Milwaukee Renaissance Academy - a public, UWM-authorized charter school on in Milwaukee's center city. Additionally, she taught Civics and U.S. History at Lincoln Hills School for boys in Irma, Wisconsin - a secure, all-male juvenile facility operated by the Department of Juvenile Corrections. While she loved her position at the institution, she returned to Milwaukee to make a difference in the lives of young people to help them avoid a path that would lead to corrections. She most recently worked as an Alternative Education teacher at the Milwaukee Job Corps Center, as well as a tutor and mentor through the Running Rebels Community Organization.
